The Cursive Alphabet

About this site

The Cursive Alphabet shows how to write every cursive letter and number, one stroke at a time. Each animation follows the shape of the letter exactly, and the numbered steps say where the pen starts, which way it moves and where it stops.

The style of cursive

The letters are a traditional American school cursive, the style most US schools that teach cursive use, and the one most adults learned. Where a second form of a letter is common on school charts, such as the looped capital F and T or the capital Q written like a 2, the site shows both.

How the letters are made

The letter shapes come from Playwrite US Trad, a typeface designed for teaching this style of cursive and released under the SIL Open Font License. The pen path through each letter was traced and checked against published classroom stroke descriptions, so the order and direction of every stroke match the way the letter is taught. The practice sheets and charts are drawn from the same data as the animations.

Who it is for

Parents helping a child with homework, teachers who need a clear chart or a practice sheet, and adults relearning cursive. The explanations are written for grown-ups. The printables work for any age.
